The West Shore Lake Pontchartrain Hurricane Protection System (WSLP) continues to make significant progress toward providing 100-year storm surge protection for more than 60,000 residents in St. Charles, St. John the Baptist, and St. James Parishes. The system spans approximately 18.5 miles and includes levees, floodwalls, drainage structures, and pump stations extending from Garyville to LaPlace.

With construction beginning in late 2022, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), in partnership with CPRA and the Pontchartrain Levee District (PLD), remain active with construction ongoing on 11 separate reaches. The largest construction contract, for the Reserve Relief Canal and I-55 pump stations, was advertised in 2025 with construction to begin in 2026. These efforts mark continued progress along both the eastern and western sections of the levee alignment, with visible construction activities at two points along I-10 in St. John the Baptist Parish.

In parallel with levee construction, CPRA and USACE are continuing efforts to integrate and construct the River Reintroduction into Maurepas Swamp, a critical mitigation feature for WSLP and another major restoration effort in south Louisiana. This component will not only restore wetland hydrology and improve ecological resilience, but it also serves as a natural buffer between the levee system and surrounding wetlands. The combined approach is among the strongest examples of integrated restoration and protection in coastal Louisiana.

Additional site work continues across the WSLP Project area, including test sections, clay and sand stockpiling, and levee section grading. The WSLP Project remains on track for completion in 2030, with CPRA, USACE, and PLD closely coordinating to maintain construction momentum and ensure long-term storm surge protection and ecosystem benefits for the River Parishes.
