The White Lake Wetlands Conservation Area (WLWCA), a vital 72,000-acre freshwater marsh ecosystem in Vermilion Parish, provides critical habitat for wildlife and invaluable recreational opportunities. Managed by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF), the area is one of the leading models of wetlands conservation in the state, prioritizing habitat for waterfowl, wading birds, and the state's whooping crane reintroduction program.

LDWF and CPRA have collaborated to develop the WLWCA Master Plan, a comprehensive, forward-looking plan that provides a coordinated strategy to restore the area's ecological integrity, revitalize its facilities, and secure its long-term financial and cultural value for generations to come.

To implement this cross-agency effort, CPRA is advancing projects to restore shorelines and strengthen fragile marsh, while LDWF is working towards managing the area's ecological resources and restoring its facilities.

WHITE LAKE SHORELINE PROTECTION (ME-0040)

One of these projects was the White Lake Shoreline Projection project, an effort to stop and reverse erosion along the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway (GIWW) that runs through the area. This project will provide flood protection to agricultural resources north of the GIWW and stop saltwater intrusion from endangering critical freshwater habitats.
